What is an Official Master’s Degree?
The New European Higher Education Area (EHEA)
The Bologna Declaration has finally reached Spain. This process will involve changing the Spanish higher education system into a European one, as part of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).
The EHEA will mean that by 2010 university degrees in all European countries will guarantee convergent academic programs, immediate recognition of qualifications anywhere in Europe, free movement between countries and lifelong learning.
Official degrees will be divided according to undergraduate and graduate studies, with official graduate degrees (already a reality) being defined through the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).
Official graduate studies will be divided into 2nd cycle studies and 3rd cycle studies. In the 2nd cycle, students will study Official Master’s Degrees (one or two years) and in the 3rd cycle, Doctorates..
This new structure for higher education finally allows individuals with three-year university degrees as well as engineers and technical architects to enter a doctorate program (3rd cycle) through an Official Master’s degree.
